For those that know me personally, I love vampires. Though love is not a strong enough word. Much of my fiction is based around vampires. A select few special people have had a glimpse at a fiction novel I’ve started that will be an adult fiction novel. And so far – good things have been said even though I’ve been absolutely worried about it. Time to breathe and relax and continue writing – something I want to make sure I do more regularly. (Goes back to my lack of time management I mentioned in the previous post.)
But the main point of this post is to ask you what myth and lore subjects are you drawn to. Do you love vampires? werewolves? sorcery and magic? something else? And if you love vampires, I want to know what you like and don’t like about most books (and movies I guess) about vampires. Please fill this post with thoughts and opinions!!
PS: Don’t worry – vampires won’t sparkle in my novels.

Pretty much all of it really. Vampires, werewolves, old gods, elves, fairies, sorcery, spirits, and most everything in between. Hell I’m even writing a book myself that draws on Norse mythology, specifically the tree of life and the legends around it such as Odin. Though I doubt I’m going to name any old Gods by, well, name. As for what I don’t like about the vampire world, you already referenced it, it’s just one word. Twilight. That is all.

You named pretty much everything I love, too! I love it all really as long as the author (or director) do the subject justice. When it comes Twilight I won’t lie – avid fan! However, as a huge lover of vampires the sparkling part just kills it. And the movies just make the sparkle issue worse. But I can guarantee my book is no Twilight. And if any of the people who’ve read my beginning read this post (which I hope they do) they can verify that it is no sparkling teen vampire novel. LOL Far from…
And if you ever want anyone to read and given unbiased thoughts on what you’ve written, I’d be honored to do it. I love old gods and know a fair bit about them, too.

I actually have a Swedish girl helping me with the names too ^^ I have read all of the Twilight books, except for that half finished fifth one she never wrote because people leaked it, and I’ll admit, the books themselves weren’t too bad. I have bigger issues with the fans really. Anyway, this isn’t about Twilight. I also wish to correct a mistake, I said the tree of life, I meant the world tree Yggrasil. I also just learnt that Slavic mythology has it’s own world tree. This pleases me.

Hahaha true – not about Twilight. And most mythologies have a world tree concept! It’s one of my favorites. If you ever need help with Slavic mythology, let me know. 😉 I’ll help you dig and get it translated for you. Unfortunately, most of it hasn’t been translated into the English language. And you definitely have the proper person helping you with the story. She’ll know it better than most of us! 😀

But she’s actually yet to read any of it though. Only Jessie has read some of it. I feel kind of odd though because it was sitting on a shelf for months (a shelf in my computer mind) and I thought I had left it long enough, and I wrote another chapter. Then I started working on another full length story (or a novella at least). I like writing short stories, I just never have too many ideas, but then I started writing this other one, and I just blasted through it. I wrote four chapters in maybe a few hours. I think planning for the first book took away me wanting to write it. I just like to write but for something long, you really need to plan and take down notes as well so you don’t forget things. When I reread stuff I saw that I had basically repeated an explanation given by someone else earlier in the story, and even changed it. Argh. I love writing but I’m not much of a planner. Plus this second book seems to flow much better, and even seems better written. Even though I wanted the first one to be what I actually wrote, to be something I could be proud of and want people to read.
I hope this isn’t too terribly confusing and that you don’t mind me using your comments to drown you in my writing woes.

Hehehe… not confusing at all! That’s my worry and fear with this novel. I started with the first 2,000 words back in 2007. Picked it back up again a month ago roughly where it grew to almost 10,500 words in one weekend. I don’t plan at all. I just write. I can fix issues of conflicting points and what not in the editing process. You should read a book by Stephen King called ‘On Writing’ which is informative on how he writes his novels and what has and hasn’t worked for him. I realized he and I had many of the same habits (kind of reassuring personally). Definitely made me feel a bit more confident in my writing and my methods, though!

I haven’t read that but I have read how one of my favourite authors Garth Nix writes, and I was pretty much the same. He invents a world and he explores it with his characters. He doesn’t know every detail about the world he makes. It’s one of the things that makes writing fun for him. But I also know of people who make many many notes and basically create every aspect of their world. I could never do that, and I think that trying to do that is what killed my first book for me. I’ve made note of important plot points, and got down what the characters are like. I think now I’m free to write, and just take down important notes as they happen. But I’m already burnt out on it. For now though. I can use this other book and any other short stories I can think of to help get away from the first book until I’m ready to really dig my teeth into it again. I just need to occasionally reread what I’ve written, rewrite a bit here or there, and probably consider taking more notes. One worry I have with writing is that I don’t think I’m descriptive enough. I can see everything in my head, but I don’t think I put it into words very well.
